Importance Of Blood Volume

  • Normal blood volume is important because it ensures that enough oxygen and other vital nutrients are delivered to cells throughout the body, including the brain.

  • If there is not enough blood circulating, it can lead to symptoms such as brain fog experienced by individuals with POTS.

  • Adequate hydration and fluid repletion can help increase the amount of blood delivered to organs, tissues, and cells, leading to improvements in symptoms and overall quality of life.

  • Managing low blood volume is not an easy task for many with POTS, especially given the variability in symptoms, specifically gastrointestinal symptoms.

  • While some with POTS may find that extra oral hydration each day is enough to provide them with significant symptom relief, others may find that they need to incorporate salt tablets, oral rehydration solutions, and even medications, depending on what is recommended by their medical team.

  • If you are interested in learning more about these various options, we have a Managing Symptoms website section that expands on each in more detail.
