Medical IDs
Some in our community may find it beneficial to wear a medical ID bracelet that contains pertinent information in case of emergencies. Although we recommend talking to your medical team about information they recommend you include, we did want to review some potential options. You can discuss these with them as you consider how to personalize your medical ID to meet your specific needs.
1.) A helpful place to start is to consider what medical situations that involve others helping or intervening when in public or even at home could occur as a result of your conditions. Examples specific to POTS can include fainting and examples specific to MCAS could include anaphylaxis.
2.) Ask yourself this question- if someone asked you to tell them in 30 seconds or less what is most pertinent for healthcare providers to know about your conditions and overall health, what would you include? This can serve as a helpful guide when trying to determine what information to include.
3.) A medical ID can be worn and/or you can keep a medical ID card with you in your wallet.
4.) Sometimes it can be helpful to include instructions for others. Some examples can include what is helpful for you if you faint- including a notice that you have a condition that increases your risk for fainting, or what is most helpful if you do faint, can be beneficial.
5.) Other potential options can include your name, list of medical conditions you are comfortable sharing and feel pertinent to include, allergies, list of life-saving medications (like epinephrine for anaphylaxis), and emergency contact information.
6.) There are so many Medical ID options! Some companies have options that allow you to include it as a part of your smart watch, there are Apps you can download on your phone, card options you can keep in your wallet with QR codes that can be scanned for quick access to needed medical records and information, and many other great alternatives!
