Melatonin

  • Melatonin is another drug that can have a sympatholytic effect, inhibiting aspects of the sympathetic nervous system, helping individuals with hyperadrenergic forms of POTS.

  • It has been shown to reduce the levels of norepinephrine in individuals when standing (Green et al., 2014).

  • Given the significant sleep difficulties many individuals with POTS can have, in addition to added sleep difficulties some may have when taking beta-blockers, researchers have wanted to test how well melatonin would work for individuals in our community if taken at night (Green et al., 2014).

  • We will update this section as that research becomes available.
